3 day adventure down the Whanganui River from Taumarunui to Whakahoro)

The package includes 

  • Canoe hire, life jackets, and safety instruction.

  • 2 nights accommodation at Posh Pioneers.

  • Fully catered meals ( 2 dinners, 1 lunch, and 2 breakfasts ).

  • Activities. ( Soap or knife making, all materials, and safety equipment supplied).

Soap making – Heather will work with you turning ingredients into products, making your own kawakawa soap. 

Knifemaking- Fritz will demonstrate the age-old art of knife making where you will use the tools to make your own finished knife.

Or just relax in the ambiance of Posh Pioneers nestled in the native bush with birds and animals in their natural surroundings. There are bush walks, horseshoe throwing, or croquet. You might prefer to pose in one of our pioneer costumes and have a framed photo taken. Take a wander around our extensive organic garden viewing heritage plants and trees. Everything has a story here at Posh Pioneers.

All food comes either from our large organic vegetable garden or is locally sourced. Specialty NZ teas available as is our amazing Fairtrade organic barista coffee.

Day 1

Meet up just outside Taurmarunui @ 8:00 am where you will be supplied with a canoe and instructed ready to start your canoeing adventure on the Whanganui River. Spend your day paddling approximately 35km of the Whanganui exploring waterfalls, historical places, and rapids before arriving at Maharanui landing in the afternoon, and receiving a warm welcome to Posh Pioneers. Please bring along your own morning tea and lunch for the first day.

Enjoy a freshly made barista coffee or tea and fresh homemade scones on arrival. A guided tour of the accommodation will follow and you will become familiar with our custom-made Shepherds’ huts. Later enjoy your three-course dinner in our dining room.

After dinner, admire the night sky before turning in.

What to Bring?

  • clothes for canoeing and for your stay

  • a raincoat and warm clothes incase the weather turns wet or cold

  • lunch and morning tea for your first day while you are canoeing

  • camera

 

Day 2

Wake up to the smell of freshly baked bread, NZ teas, coffee, fruit juice and several breakfast choices.  

Spend your day participating in either 

1. Knifemaking course where you will craft your own knife from high carbon steel. 

2. Learn the art of making soap. 

Lunch will be provided along with refreshments.

Spend your afternoon finishing your course and exploring Posh Pioneers or take in the serenity or reading a good book.

Enjoy your evening meal, the various games we have or relax in a quiet spot.

Day 3

Smell that coffee and tea, 

After enjoying your breakfast it’s time to package your soap, or knife, before getting back in the canoes and paddling 4km down the Whanganui River through the scenic Retaruke Reach. If you are lucky you might view the salt spring. Your river journey ends a short way up the Retaruke River at Whakahoro where you will be met at 10:00 am and shuttled back to your vehicles at Taumarunui.
